Reserves Management Plan

Ngā Pae Whenua is a joint management body that is made up of iwi representatives from Ngāti Koroki Kahukura and members of Waipā District Council. The reserves under its care were part of the Ngāti Korokī Kahukura Treaty settlement.

The four reserves under the care of Ngā Pae Whenua are:

  • Taumatawīwī Recreation Reserve
  • Waikaukau Recreation Reserve
  • Te Reti Scenic Reserve
  • Korokī Kahukura ki Hinuera Scenic Reserve

Your involvement and input are important for Ngā Pae Whenua to understand the community's aspirations and challenges for the reserves.

You will have the opportunity to provide feedback on the future of these reserves through the process of developing the Reserves Management Plan (RMP); this will include a formal public submission round.

The RMP will aim to:

  • understand mana whenua and other users’ values and aspirations for the use of the reserves
  • guide the management and use of the reserves
  • comply with statutory requirements for the administration of reserve land
  • align the plan with legislation, national policy statements, policies, strategies and bylaws.

The four reserves

Taumatawīwī Recreation Reserve is located south of Mighty River Domain, Lake Karāpiro and sees the most public use of the reserves. It is used for walking and cycling with the Te Awa River Ride extending through it.

Waikaukau Recreation Reserve adjoins Arapuni Landing Reserve and is used infrequently.

Te Reti and Korokī Kahukura ki Hinuera are scenic reserves and see the least use; the former is in an isolated rural spot while the latter is surrounded by private land and inaccessible to the public.

Background

These four reserves are owned by Ngāti Korokī Kahukura Trust under the Ngāti Korokī Kahukura Claims Settlement Act 2014 (Settlement Act). They are managed as public reserves through a joint committee established under the Settlement Act, called Ngā Pae Whenua.

Ngā Pae Whenua is made up of iwi representatives from Ngāti Koroki Kahukura and members of Waipā District Council. It is responsible for the administration and the day-to-day management of the reserves.

Ngā Pae Whenua has commissioned GMD Consultants to lead the process of developing the RMP. GMD Consultants are working closely with mana whenua, other partner organisations, lessees and adjoining landowners to draft the RMP.

Community input will help shape the draft Reserves Management Plan.
